People love it when you lose: Summer Fridays 10.4

It’s Labor Day Weekend and I haven’t done so well with cranking out the mixes this year, but here’s #4 which is one of the weirder mixes I’ve ever made including at least one artist I pretty much would’ve never thought I’d ever put on one of these. But King of the Streets, whose digital graffiti graces this week’s cover, told me to seek inspiration from his artwork…so blame him! There’s also at least three amazing new songs here, via Baxter Dury, LCD Soundsystem and Kelley Stoltz. And inbetween…please enjoy!

There are, technically, three more weeks of summer so I’m gonna try and finish strong. See you next week.

Those Were the (Summer Fri)Days

Have you read Meet Me In The Bathroom? It’s an oral history of the early-’00s NYC music scene and is pretty entertaining even if it leaves out a lot of stuff. It really did feel like a special time, especially coming off the ’90s where there wasn’t much going on locally/musically. Living in Williamsburg at the time and being a music fan, it was hard to avoid. With that in mind, here’s a Summer Fridays mix with songs pulled entirely from that era (2000 – 2005). No cocaine necessary to enjoy it!

Quel oiseau magnifique! Summer Fridays 10.2 (Bastille Day édition)

It’s Bastille Day and Friday, so that means an all-French edition of Summer Fridays. I’ve done a few of these and feared I’d gone to the well too many times, so I got some help from some friends. Crowdsourcing works! I had an abundance of stuff to choose from but kept being drawn to the dancier songs, so that’s the direction this one takes. There are a few repeat offenders (MC Solaar, Lio, Bertrand Burgalat) but a lot of this was new to me too. I’ve listened to this one a few times through and I dig it. Enjoy!

Dance to the Musizika: Summer Fridays 9.7

sf-9.7

I remember back in 1999 when West Nile Virus hit NYC, during that ultra-hot July, they sprayed down the streets of South Williamsburg along Kent at like 2AM. There were cars leading the way a few blocks ahead, blaring horns and warnings to “GET INSIDE NOW WE ARE SPRAYING INSECTICIDE.” It was like some sort of post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie. Scary! Thankfully, Zika hasn’t really hit here, but for my friend Kelly who lives in Miami it’s very real. Weirdly, according to her, the fear has manifested itself into a musical subgenenre of dance music they’re calling “zika wave” which is somewhere between Belgian “new beat” and Italo? Or it could just be a joke on this party flyer. Either way it was her inspiration for this week’s cover art. I think the “9,7” is made out of mosquitos?

I didn’t put any New Beat on here but there is a little Italo (Chromatics) and I wanted to put the great new Radio Dept song “Swedish Guns” on here so everything is pretty much either dance or dub. Also, I dipped into Sandinista! for a second week in a row. Please enjoy, whether you’re wearing a mosquito net suit for not.

Too Many Summer Fridays

sf-9.6

As summer roars out we have a fun, synth-heavy pop edition of Summer Fridays. Cover art is a photo by me of this custom upcycled Summer Fridays fabric notebook made by my friend Kelly who has a company called Too Many Sparkles that makes notebooks, cards, and art like this. That yellow thing is not a headband but a vintage pair of impractical new wave sunglasses that I’ve owned for over 30 years. Radical.

Dog Days (Pt 1?): Summer Fridays 9.4

SF9-4

Dog Days is right! The heat index in NYC is like 110 and you don’t even wanna go out in that stuff. Here’s a cool mix of hot indie rock, both old and new, including one song I can’t tell you what it is. Infamous digital graffiti artist King of the Streets is back again to do cover art, and you may spy rising dog-of-internet Kate Moss The Dog in the rearview. Follow her on Instagram, won’t you?

Stay cool party people.

Conditions Mild: Summer Fridays 9.3

sf9.3b

It’s a laid-back mix this week as Summer Fridays head into the long shadows of August. I really love this Ultimate Painting song that leads things off, and the whole thing works pretty well in a chilled out groove. Cover art this week is by my good friend Don Gochenour who actually made that “hours” sign and then stuck it on some store’s door and then photographed it! Very cool.

I play just what I feel: Summer Fridays 9.2

SF9.2

I really wanted to use this great new Dent May single (song title of the year?) which sent me down a ’70s soft/yacht rock direction, and I really just went for it (see: Boz Scaggs and The Dan). There are some obscurites on here (The Poppy Family, Doris) and a song off Love’s funk/disco record. I end things with a Flo & Eddie (of The Turtles) song that is both fitting of the mix, but with lyrics that seem like they could’ve been written today (like, literally today).

Well you’re in luck because that’s what we have here with the first mix of Summer Fridays 2012.* I am hoping to do these every Friday, though I’m gainfully employed now (we don’t get summer Fridays at my job, unfortunately) and have a lot less time — and energy — than I have the last four years. Which is good! Anyway, we’ll see how I do. This kickoff mix has lots of great new music, I think, and a few oldies peppered in as well. Like usual. Slide away…

Friday on My Mind: Summer Fried Haze 4.7

We’re in it now. It’s July and it’s HOT and I’ve blown my fuses twice already. That’s what I get for making toast with the A/C on. Try not to lose power when cranking this one, though volume should definitely be set to Very Loud. Cover art this week is by Mazing Vids co-conspirator and genius tie-maker Ryan Sovereign did the cover. He’s Summer Fridays’ lucky number, as he did the ace cover for 3.7 last year. Nice job, don’t you think?

Ryan is a post-punk aficionado so I tilted slightly in that direction on this one. Enjoy!
