Rrrrrrrrev UP: Summer Fridays 6.4!

I don’t know about where you live, gentle reader, but here in Brooklyn we are in the midst of a heatwave. It was 90° at midnight last night. Midnight! That’s some tropical shit right there. When it’s this hot, my mind turns to the ocean…and surfing. Well maybe not the latter part, but this week’s mix is vaguely surf inspired, partly due to seeing wonderful Seattle band La Luz last weekend. Their terrific track “Sure as Spring” is track #5 this week, but don’t skip ahead!

There’s also new music from Florida’s Jacuzzi Boys, The Resonars, Aussie band Dick Diver, great new UK band Hookworms and a “Mystery Track.” Plus Revillos’ “Rev Up” (which you may recognize from Sixteen Candles), The Tyde, and bonehead/offensive garage rock obscurity “Beaver Patrol” by Wylde Knights which was later covered by Pop Will Eat Itself. And lots more! Cover art this week is by veteran Summer Fridays contributor Kate Bryant whose new blog Lady Copywriter dissects the ad world in entertaining fashion. Check it out.

Also check out the mix, which you can grab right here:

1. The Revillos – Rev Up
2. Hookworms – Radio Tokyo
3. The Tyde – Go Ask Yr Dad
4. The Cryan Shames – Sugar & Spice
5. La Luz – Sure as Spring
6. Wylde Knights – Beaver Patrol
7. The Resonars – The World is Wrong
8. Revolving Paint Dream – Seven Seconds
9. Go Violets – Josie
10. The Keepsies – She (Was My Babie)
11. The Kinks – Big Sky
12. Yawn – Bed Rugs
13. Super Furry Animals – (Drawing) Rings Around the World
14. Dick Diver – Lime Green Shirt
15. Jacuzzi Boys – Double Vision
16. Fever B – Pop Punk Love
17. Devo – Through Being Cool
18. The Hombres – Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out)
19. ???? ???? & ??? ??????? – ???? ?? ???
20. Allah-Las – Long Journey
21. The Sandals – Theme from Endless Summer

Not to beat a dead horse, but this is an actual mix where songs smush into one another. No shuffling, man. Until next week, stay cool.

Juice and Crunch: Sound Bites interviews Eternal Summers

I am super-psyched to have Eternal Summers playing Sound Bites series at Fulton Stall Market this Sunday (8/12). It’s a free show, as always, and I DJ at 2PM and the band is on at 3PM sharp! The Stage is set up on Beekman just off South Street down by the seaport. Come down!

Eternal Summers new album, Correct Behavior, is one of my favorites of the year, they are great live and you’d be dumb to miss this show! DUMB!

Nicole, Daniel and Jonathan were kind enough to answer some food-related questions:

You’ll be playing at the Fulton Stall markets. What’s your favorite vegetable? And why.

Daniel: Carrots. I like to juice them.
Jonathan: Carrots too. I like to crunch em.
Nicole: Green Beans because they go with everything!

What’s your least favorite and why?

Daniel: I like okra buy sometimes okra can be kinda weird. I hope Okra doesn’t read this!
Jonathan: Onion. Texture. Taste. Overrides everything. I don’t dig.
Nicole: Radishes but they’re not bad. Just not a staple.

Did any particular food fuel the making of Correct Behavior?

Kombucha, 7-11 hotdogs, colloidal silver, nachos, kale.

Has food ever influenced your songwriting?

It always does. We have gotten a lot more physical in our music so if we eat junk it really affects our creativity and energy level.

Any good food-related band anecdotes?

Lio who runs Kanine Records used to make fun of how Daniel and I (Nicole) used to share our food all the time. We were just trying to save money but I guess it looked hilarious since he was buying our food!

Who is the best cook in the band? Who is the finickiest eater? Do you often eat together as a band when not on the road?

Nicole is the best cook. Jonathan is the finickiest eater and we usually just get coffee together.

You’re the first non-NYC band to play the Sound Bites series but you play here often. Any favorite Brooklyn/NYC restaurants?

Ella Cafe in Williamsburg, and this rad BBQ place on Bedford next to Soundfix records. Very surly drink names and tasty brisket!

What food would you imagine Eternal Summers music being paired with?

A salad and some raw meat.

Sunny Days and Inner Tubes: Summer Fridays 5.10

Sorry about no new mix last week. We had snafus in both the audio and visual departments and in addition to other commitments, it didn’t quite come together. Anyway, we’re back this Friday with a lot of good stuff for you to hear, including a song by new favorite new band, Stealing Sheep; a rarity from the Blur 21 box set; new music from Chicago’s Mazes, SF’s Sic Alps, Welsh oddballs Race Horses, oddball oddball Lawrence’s Go Kart Mozart, and some “classic cuts” from The Wedding Present, New Order, T. Rex and a tip of the hat to late astronaut Sally Ride. And more!

Cover art this is by longtime contributor (and recent post grad school grad) Kelly Hitzing who has been spending this summer tubing down rivers in Tennessee and Florida. Which makes me think of the great Atari arcade game Tubin’ more than anything else. I digress. There are also FOUR songs with the word “sun” or some variation therein which I totally didn’t do on purpose.

Download and enjoy!

1) Tame Impala – Elephant
2) T-Rex – Jeepster
3) Mazes – Messes
4) New Order – Weirdo
5) The Sea and Cake – Harps

Yo! No shuffling!

Skate or Die: Summer Fridays 5.8

This week’s cover art was made by yearly Summer Fridays contributor and renegade digital street artist King of the Streets (KOTS) who, as you all know by now, values graffiti and property rights in equal measure. Hence, all his tagging is done via MS Paint. He also loves to shred and requested that this mix be something you can skate to. Well I did my best. There are some of the most aggressive songs ever committed to a Summer Fidays on this one (like GvsB) and maybe one of the most annoying (forgotten ’80s band The Sicilian Vespers, who I love). Plus, new tunes from METZ, The Soft Pack, Megaphonic Thrift, JEFF the Brotherhood and more. Rad?

1. Ty Segall – Tell Me What’s Inside Your Heart

18. The Intelligence – The Entertainer
19. Dinosaur Jr – Freak Scene
20. Gang of Four – I Found That Essence Rare

Eskimo was underlined: Summer Fridays 5.6

Hello and welcome to this week’s mix. It’s hot here in NYC, with temperatures sticking in the ’90s for the next five days so they’re predicting. The kind of heat that can make you crazy. (As documented by David Lee Roth in 1985.) Way up near the North Pole, it’s much colder but still warm for there I guess. Also, it’d daylight 22 hours of the day. Which can make you crazy, as documented by Robin Williams in that movie Insomnia. But cover artist Kevin Alvir, who also fronts The Hairs (who can be heard in this mix too), has depicted happier summer times in the Arctic where you can frolic in your underwear with a fruity beverage and the polar bears (cats?) are friendly.

1. Voice Of The Beehive – The Beat of Love
2. The Fresh & Onlys – Yes or No
3. The Royal We – All the Rage
4. Sheer Agony – Pet Crow
5. DIIV – Wait

18. Caged Animals – This Summer I’ll Make it Up to You

20. The Monkees – A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You

Someday I may do liner notes again. EDIT: I did! Liner notes are below!

Meanwhile, enjoy the tunes! Oh…no shuffle!

Marco! Polo! Marco! Polo! Summer Fridays 5.3!

These kids just went swimming in the East River I think. Was going to write “…back when it was safe to do so,” but it was probably more polluted whenever this was taken (around 1911). Anyway, a swim sounds nice, doesn’t it? Maybe you have a pool in your backyard. Well this mix is perfect for your next pool party and should sync up pefectly to a game of Marco Polo. Or maybe a beach party. There are two “beach” bands on this mix and though I think there should really be a moratorium on that word in band names both of them are good, so please don’t judge.

1. Beach Pigs – Catch Up in the Sun
2. Cleaners from Venus – Julie Profumo
3. King Tuff – Unusual World
4. Sonny & The Sunsets – Pretend You Love Me
5. Grant Lee Phillips – Beautiful Dreamers
6. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – You Need Me on My Own
7. Hot Chip – These Chains
8. Laetitia Sadier – Find Me the Pulse of the Universe
9. TEEN – Better
10. Crocodiles – No Black Clouds for Dee Dee
11. Luna – Astronaut

14. A Place to Bury Strangers – Alone
15. Holograms – Chasing My Mind
16. Nude Beach – Some Kinda Love
17. XTC – Sgt. Rock (Is Going to Help Me)

In this world of Spotify and everythign else I still make this with the songs mixed together so you won’t have dead silence at the most inopportune time, so please avoid listening on shuflle. Once again I ran out of time and may get liner note up tonight but we’ll see. There’s a lot of good stuff on this one.

Just Your Luck: Summer Fridays 4.13

We’re at #13. Unlucky for you…this week’s cover art is by me, the first one I’ve done this year. The original photo is by Danny Lyon, part of a series he took in Brooklyn the summer of 1974. My photoshop skills could use a little polishing but I don’t think it turned out too bad. Musically, this week’s mix was partially inspired by me seeing Upside Down: The Creation Records Story where Primal Scream features heavily. A little madchester, a little dub and some other stuff that made sense at the time.

1. Primal Scream – Higher Than the Sun
2. Chrome Sparks – Soul & <3
3. The 2 Bears – Bear Hug
4. Holy Ghost! – Jam for Jerry
5. Inspiral Carpets – Directing Traffik
6. Cat’s Eyes – Over You
7. Spoon – Me and the Bean

16. Athlete – Out of Nowhere

Did you know I actually mix these songs together? You probably did. That’s why I’m always like “Hey no shuffling!” But you do what you like. Liner notes after the jump.

Two Mixes is a Sign of a Cluttered Mind: Summer Fridays 4.12

My brain’s not working so good this week. I mistakenly assigned cover art duty for Summer Fridays 4.12 to two people and didn’t realize it until they both sent in the finished work. Instead of asking one of them to redo it, I decided to make two mixes this week. The first, with cover by Daniele Yandel (who plays drums in new Brooklyn band The Gytters), is the “normal” indie rock mix this week.

1. Michael Cronin – Is it Alright
2. Bare Wires – Cheap Perfume
3. Unrest – Winona Ryder
4. Dent May – Wedding Day
5. The Bats – North by Northwest
6. Veronica Falls – Bad Feeling
7. Veronica Lake – Daisy Kiss

15. Small Factory – Here You Come
16. Lê Almeida – Micropontes
17. The Loft – Up the Hill and Down the Slope
18. Fastest Girl – Neil Armstrong
19. Frankie Rose – Soma
20. Rocketship – Your New Boyfriend

The second was inspired by the Trader Vic’s cocktails on the other cover art, done by Summer Fridays MVP Greg Morris. I don’t know if this would make a cocktail party more successful, but that’s the vibe I was going for.

Information Please: Summer Fridays 4.11

How is it August already? (I think I ask this every year.) Anyway, we’re back with this week’s mix which is a little more hodgepodge than I’ve done this year. We’ve got dance, soul, ’70s obscurities, and the requisite whiteboy indie. But I think it works pretty well and there’s some great new music this week and hopefully some crate digging you’ll dig as well. Art this week by Ben Smith who is pals with famed tagger KOTS and I met at this year’s SXSW Festival where we talked music and neti pots. Yes, it’s a drawing of me. Ben, you’ve got a career on 42nd St. if you ever tire of the West Coast.

1. TV Girl – Benny and the Jetts
2. Pilot – January
3. Zoos of Berlin – Haven’t Eyes
4. The Supremes – It’s Time to Break Down
5. Hall & Oates – I Can’t Go for That

8. The Raveonettes – Ignite
9. Widowspeak – Fir Coat
10. The Sneetches – From an Empty Sea
11. The Tyde – Henry VIII

13. The Research – The Way You Used to Smile
14. Sly & the Family Stone – Runnin’ Away
15. The Experimental Pop Band – James Remains
16. Erika Spring – Six More Weeks
17. Casiokids – Det haster!
18. US 69 – Yesterday’s Folks
19. Scritti Politti – Cooking

You know the rules — no shuffling. Liner notes are below.

PS: about the download. Over at the Sendspace download page, after clicking the “Regular Download” button, it takes you to a new page. Scroll down and click the “Click here to start download from sendspace” link and not the big DOWNLOAD or PLAY thing at the top…that’s an ad.

Gordon is a Moron or: Stand Up for Rebel Rule! Summer Fridays 4.9!

If I get cover art in before I make the mix (which isn’t usually the case), it can influence the direction it takes. Case in point: Jimbo Matison sent me the artwork for this week a good 10 days ago and you can’t really put on a bunch of wispy indiepop songs with a cover like this so I decided Summer Fridays 4.9 would be the rocker of the bunch. Also, I kinda had to either include The Clash or Bobby Fuller Four. The former woulda made more sense, sonically, but I chose the latter and think it works. There’s also a fair amount of early-’00s rawk on here (is that Electric Six you spy?… yes it is) and less than a usual number of brand new tracks. But there’s probably more bands on here that people know than what I usually do.  It may not go to 11, but 4.9 is pretty damn loud. I’m very happy with this one.

1. Iron Virgin – Rebels Rule
2. Urge Overkill – Rock n’ Roll Submarine
3. The Adverts – One Chord Wonders
4. Diamond Nights – Saturday Fantastic
5. Queens of the Stone Age – No One Knows
6. Electric Six – Naked Pictures of Your Mother
7. Bobby Fuller Four – I Fought the Law
8. The Vaccines – Norgaard
9. Bratmobile – The Real Janelle
10. The Darkness – Growing on Me
11. Mudhoney – Let it Slide
12. Pixies – Space (I Believe In)
13. Led Zeppelin – Dancing Days
14. JEFF the Brotherhood – Mellow Out
15. Agent Orange – Pipeline
16. The Soundtrack of Our Lives – Karmageddon
17. The Koobas – Royston Rose
18. Jilted John – Jilted John
19. The Damned – Anti-Pope
20. McLusky – To Hell with Good Intentions

Those about to rock, we salute you. Those about to shuffle, a pox upon your kingdom! Liner notes after the jump. Continue Reading
