Maybe she’ll call me back: Summer Fridays 10.1

Can you believe this is the is the tenth summer of Summer Fridays mixes? When I started these, 2008, George W Bush was still in office, we were on the brink of the real estate bust and recession, and I’d just been laid off work. Those were the days, huh! Well, we’re all still here, and thanks for sticking around. I’m gonna try and do these every Friday, we’ll see. Anyway, here’s the first of 2017, opening with a brand new Baby Dayliner song — his first new music since Summer Fridays existed. We’ve also got new Broken Social Scene, Melody’s Echo Chamber, Cold Beat…as well as oldies by Bowie, Eno and more.

You can stream it, or download. Enjoy!

Do these old shoes look funny? Summer Fridays 9.8

sf-9.8

We’re winding down but Summer’s still here and so are Summer Fridays mixes. This is unlike any I’ve done before, in that I don’t think I’ve ever had so many genuine “hits” on one mix. Of course the theme is new for Summer Fridays too. My good friend Sarah did the cover art and, as I suspected, it features her dog Gertie (the third dog cover star this season!). What with the down home flavor of the pic, and Sarah’s love of country, I knew what I had to do. This mix also features Sarah’s favorite ever singer, Donna Fargo. Or was it another D, anyway, it’s all country. Only two songs on this mix are from the last decade and only one from this year. Most are from before 1975. I think this one turned out good. Enjoy!

Dance to the Musizika: Summer Fridays 9.7

sf-9.7

I remember back in 1999 when West Nile Virus hit NYC, during that ultra-hot July, they sprayed down the streets of South Williamsburg along Kent at like 2AM. There were cars leading the way a few blocks ahead, blaring horns and warnings to “GET INSIDE NOW WE ARE SPRAYING INSECTICIDE.” It was like some sort of post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie. Scary! Thankfully, Zika hasn’t really hit here, but for my friend Kelly who lives in Miami it’s very real. Weirdly, according to her, the fear has manifested itself into a musical subgenenre of dance music they’re calling “zika wave” which is somewhere between Belgian “new beat” and Italo? Or it could just be a joke on this party flyer. Either way it was her inspiration for this week’s cover art. I think the “9,7” is made out of mosquitos?

I didn’t put any New Beat on here but there is a little Italo (Chromatics) and I wanted to put the great new Radio Dept song “Swedish Guns” on here so everything is pretty much either dance or dub. Also, I dipped into Sandinista! for a second week in a row. Please enjoy, whether you’re wearing a mosquito net suit for not.

Do You Like My Corn, Jerry? Summer Fridays 9.5

SF9_5
I had already picked out this space disco version of “Popcorn” when Greg sent me the cover art. Kismet or something, yeah? This is a double-sized mix — nearly two hours! — and maybe a little crazy. There is modern techno (Factory Floor), balaeric, that space disco, dub/industrial, Soul II Soul, S U R V I V E (the Stranger Things soundtrack guys), and… The Bangles (by way of Todd Terje)?!?!? Will anyone besides me actually want to listen to this thing? I guess we’ll find out.

I play just what I feel: Summer Fridays 9.2

SF9.2

I really wanted to use this great new Dent May single (song title of the year?) which sent me down a ’70s soft/yacht rock direction, and I really just went for it (see: Boz Scaggs and The Dan). There are some obscurites on here (The Poppy Family, Doris) and a song off Love’s funk/disco record. I end things with a Flo & Eddie (of The Turtles) song that is both fitting of the mix, but with lyrics that seem like they could’ve been written today (like, literally today).

Finally….Summer Fridays 9.1

summerfridays-8-1sm

I know, I know. No end of year mixes for 2015. No Wintry mixes or Sound Bites of Spring. You may have thought I was gone forever. Just a late start — I moved apartments for the first time in 18 years which took up a whole lot of my early summer. Anyway, we’re back and very happy to be here. Not sure if I’ll be able to do every Friday, but I’m hoping at least every other Friday during this summer.

Lots of great music on this one old and new. Cover art picture is by my friend and “internet wizard” Adam Sypnier. Thanks for sticking around. Hope you’re summer’s going ok despite the entire world going to shit. Enjoy.

Better Late Than Never: Summer Fridays 8.11 & 8.12

summer fridayssummerfridays

Well it’s not summer anymore and it’s not Friday, but I still had these two mixes in the hopper and I finally found time to finish them. Cover art for mix 8.11 was done by enigmatic digital graffiti artist King of the Streets. Usually he gets a more rocking mix, I felt like he might like to dance, so we start things off with Frankie Goes to Hollywood and go from there.

The final mix for 2015 — SF8-12 — has cover art by Eli Kasan of Pittsburgh’s finest, The Gotobeds. (Not to be confused with classic filmmaker/name-namer Elia Kazan.) Knowing he’s a Wire fan (Google that with the name of the band), I went sort of punk/postpunk/mutant pop for this one.

Both of these turned out good! Appologies to the cover artists for me being so delinquent in finishing them. For everyone else, enjoy a couple last blasts of summer.

Save a prayer for Summer Fridays 8.10

sf-8-10

Summer’s not over yet, and neither are Summer Fridays mixes. I just took a little break there. This week’s cover art is by frequent contributor Kelly Hitzing who always seems to find inspiration in the perspiration of her Miami home. With that in mind, here’s a mix that is definitely with the ’80s in mind, even if only a few of the songs are actually old. This one turned out well with a particularly sweet mix between the first two songs (YACHT/Hot Chip) which was by accident (but i definitely finessed it a bit once I realized the potential.) Perfect for poolside nights or listening whilst showering.

Bushes are in disagreement with the heat: Summer Fridays 8.8

sf-08

I keep a playlist of songs I like, old and new, that I want to use for Summer Fridays every year and, inevitably, some of them don’t feel all that summery. Sometimes I wait till a fall mix for those but when I saw this week’s cover art, I took it as an opportunity to use all those aggro burn-it-down songs that had been stacking up (and find some more too).

Cover art is by John Lee who was one of the first people I met on moving to NYC. I went to see his band Muckafurgason religiously. I made mixes for his wedding. Mucka went their separate ways around the time he started getting into TV and with PFFR he’s been part of some of the most amazingly, hilariously f’d up programs ever to air, including Wonder Showzen, Xavier: Renegade Angel and The Heart, She Holler. (Also Delocated which isn’t so f’d up but is awesome.) Recently he’s directed episodes of Broad City and Inside Amy Schumer, and he’s currently in Los Angeles directing the Pee-Wee Herman movie that’s being released via Netflix. He grew up in San Francisco, is a pretty die-hard New York dude and simply wrote “this is how I feel about Los Angeles” when he sent the cover art. There’s no way I couldn’t start with The Fall.

Please enjoy this rather nihilistic mix.

Summer Fridays 8.7: Everybody Loves the Sunshine (and weird mutant animals)

sf-8.7

Have you played around with Google’s Deep Dream? Cover art this week started as a picture I took of some balloons on the East River Ferry. But a couple passes through Deep Dream, it turned into that. Freaky! And fun. It seemed like a good choice for this year’s Franco/tropicalia/weird disco/etc mix which is one of the ones I always enjoy the most. It’s not as weird as the cover art. Enjoy.

Also this will be one of two Summer Fridays mixes going up this week as this one should’ve been up last Friday. I swear the next one will be up tomorrow!
