Better Late Than Never: Summer Fridays 8.11 & 8.12

summer fridayssummerfridays

Well it’s not summer anymore and it’s not Friday, but I still had these two mixes in the hopper and I finally found time to finish them. Cover art for mix 8.11 was done by enigmatic digital graffiti artist King of the Streets. Usually he gets a more rocking mix, I felt like he might like to dance, so we start things off with Frankie Goes to Hollywood and go from there.

The final mix for 2015 — SF8-12 — has cover art by Eli Kasan of Pittsburgh’s finest, The Gotobeds. (Not to be confused with classic filmmaker/name-namer Elia Kazan.) Knowing he’s a Wire fan (Google that with the name of the band), I went sort of punk/postpunk/mutant pop for this one.

Both of these turned out good! Appologies to the cover artists for me being so delinquent in finishing them. For everyone else, enjoy a couple last blasts of summer.

Save a prayer for Summer Fridays 8.10

sf-8-10

Summer’s not over yet, and neither are Summer Fridays mixes. I just took a little break there. This week’s cover art is by frequent contributor Kelly Hitzing who always seems to find inspiration in the perspiration of her Miami home. With that in mind, here’s a mix that is definitely with the ’80s in mind, even if only a few of the songs are actually old. This one turned out well with a particularly sweet mix between the first two songs (YACHT/Hot Chip) which was by accident (but i definitely finessed it a bit once I realized the potential.) Perfect for poolside nights or listening whilst showering.

Bushes are in disagreement with the heat: Summer Fridays 8.8

sf-08

I keep a playlist of songs I like, old and new, that I want to use for Summer Fridays every year and, inevitably, some of them don’t feel all that summery. Sometimes I wait till a fall mix for those but when I saw this week’s cover art, I took it as an opportunity to use all those aggro burn-it-down songs that had been stacking up (and find some more too).

Cover art is by John Lee who was one of the first people I met on moving to NYC. I went to see his band Muckafurgason religiously. I made mixes for his wedding. Mucka went their separate ways around the time he started getting into TV and with PFFR he’s been part of some of the most amazingly, hilariously f’d up programs ever to air, including Wonder Showzen, Xavier: Renegade Angel and The Heart, She Holler. (Also Delocated which isn’t so f’d up but is awesome.) Recently he’s directed episodes of Broad City and Inside Amy Schumer, and he’s currently in Los Angeles directing the Pee-Wee Herman movie that’s being released via Netflix. He grew up in San Francisco, is a pretty die-hard New York dude and simply wrote “this is how I feel about Los Angeles” when he sent the cover art. There’s no way I couldn’t start with The Fall.

Please enjoy this rather nihilistic mix.

Summer Fridays 8.7: Everybody Loves the Sunshine (and weird mutant animals)

sf-8.7

Have you played around with Google’s Deep Dream? Cover art this week started as a picture I took of some balloons on the East River Ferry. But a couple passes through Deep Dream, it turned into that. Freaky! And fun. It seemed like a good choice for this year’s Franco/tropicalia/weird disco/etc mix which is one of the ones I always enjoy the most. It’s not as weird as the cover art. Enjoy.

Also this will be one of two Summer Fridays mixes going up this week as this one should’ve been up last Friday. I swear the next one will be up tomorrow!

throwin’ shayde: Summer Fridays 8.4

summer-fridays

And Summer Fridays 8.4 finally appears. Artwork is by the very talented (and fellow West Virginian) Shayde Sartin who plays bass in The Fresh & Onlys and is currently doing the same in Sonny & the Sunsets who are on tour and may be playing a town near you soon. I love Shayde’s style — you may have seen it on Trouble in Mind Eindhoven 2015 comp recently — and am very psyched to have him do the cover art. As for the song selection, this one I started with the idea of late-’70s mutant pop, like early dB’s and went from there. Enjoy, and see you next week, whether that’s a Friday or not.

Frou-Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fridays 8.6

sf8.6web

Heyo, we’re back with another Summer Fridays mix on a summer Saturday. That’s ok, right? This week’s cover art is by Katie Harkin of the band Sky Larkin, who has done cover art for my end-of-year mixes before. You may also recognize her from the current live incarnation of Sleater-Kinney, as she was drafted to help out Corin, Carrie and Janet with extra guitar, keyboards and percussion. She’s also doing her first-ever solo show in London this September opening for Torres, so if you’re over that way, go see her!

This week’s mix has a lot of new music I really like (Cold Beat, La Luz, Chastity Belt, Flesh World) and, of course, some old favorites. How have I made 80+ Summer Fridays mixes and NEVER put Electrelane on one? That is now corrected. I always say this, but if you’re downloading and listening, don’t shuffle — this mix in particular has lots of nips and tucks and will sound extremely disjointed on shuffle. (Also I’m super proud of the segue between Chastity Belt and Widowspeak.) Of course if you’re streaming it you have no choice but to listen to it my way. I think it turned out real good.

Aboard the Sopwith Camel: Summer Fridays 8.5

sf-8.5.web

Happy Independence Day Weekend here and I hope everyone’s having a swell three-day holiday. The cover art to this week’s mix comes from Jack Cooper of the bands Ultimate Painting and Mazes. I think I may have had that Flying Ace Snoopy patch as a kid. Maybe. The new Ultimate Painting album, Green Lanes, is out soon and is awesome (look for a track on a future Summer Fridays), and the UP live experience will be in North America soon and that I highly recommend as well.

I usually let whoever does cover art pick a song and Jack choose Moon Gang‘s “ii” which is some heavy, droney, krauty stuff and 100% affected the direction of this week’s mix. It turned out well and I’ve never made a mix quite like it, so that’s something.

PS, if you’re asking yourself “What happened to Summer Friday 8.4?” well artwork got “lost in transit” and I’ll put it up when it gets here, ok? Meanwhile dig into this.

summer fridays

It’s almost actually summer and here come’s this season’s third mix. Cover art, featuring the lovely Joan Cusack in Working Girl, was made by Kevin Alvir who fronts Brooklyn’s The Hairs (who are back in business). When he thinks mix he thinks mixtape, hence the rectangular shape. As for song selections, Kevin requested Bill Fox so that put things on a definite indie rock bent. Some cool new stuff this week (Sauna Youth, Pinact, Warm Soda, Jaill) and lots of oldies too — note the version of The Feelies “Fa Ce La” is from the Ork Records box set and be prepared for it to blow your mind (especially if you’re familiar with the Crazy Rhythms version).
