So long, Summer Fridays 2013

summer-fridays

This is the last Friday of Summer 2013 (fall starts on Sunday) and I’m wrapping things up with two mixes. The first is of the electronic variety with cover art by me. The second is a rocker, with cover art by our old pal and digital grafiti artist King of the Streets (KotS) who defaces an old picture of his dad, who used to be a “local model.” Quick, some new band, take that name. KotS also requested the aMiniature song you’ll hit about halfway through the mix.

I only managed to make 10 mixes this summer, the least I’ve ever done. I will aim to do better next summer. Until then…

I was looking for some ack-shee-un but all I got was Summer Fridays 6.8

sf6-8

After taking a week of, we’re back with a new Summer Fridays mix and there’s a lot of music I’m excited about, a couple of which I maybe shouldn’t be including, hence the question marks. But there’s new Kelley Stoltz (a song about a food cart!), new Yuck, new Superchunk, my favorite new band of the week, Temples, some ’90s era oldies (TFC, Pavement, and Oasis), an old Fall song, a song the Fall covered, and more. Trust me, it’s good stuff!

Cover art is by frequent Summer Fridays contributor Kelly Hitzing who used to live here in Brooklyn but is now living the fly life in Miami. By that I mean there are a lot of bugs down there. Also alligators. Albino alligators! They will snap you in two, but burn easily.

Take me to the bridge: Summer Fridays 6.7

Summer Fridays

I manage one to make a mix like this one about once a season, that starts one way and then goes another. Like how do you get from the throb of Outfit to the soaring strains of “Tonight We Fly” and make room for Yello, The Dentists and Honey LTD? You just have to download this puppy to find out.

This mix is going up a day late, but it allowed for this week’s cover, the picture of which I took last night a few blocks from my apartment. We’ve been blessed with a spectacular season of sunsets this summer in New York. Add to that the bridge (Williamsburg) and the picture almost shot itself.

P.S. if that font on the cover looks familiar, it’s the one Peter Saville designed for New Order’s Republic. He used to give all his fonts away on his website… but not anymore.

As the Worm Turns: Summer Fridays 6.5

summer fridays

This week’s cover art is by Summer Fridays veteran Greg Morris, who has done them since at least the second year of them. I always end up doing a dancey mix with his for whatever reason and was going to do the same with this one… but then he sent the art and it pushed me in a different, darker direction. So this week’s is in the gothy shoegaze/post-punk corner of the world. Hopefully some of the tracks’ icy vibe will keep you cool.

Rrrrrrrrev UP: Summer Fridays 6.4!

sf-6-4c

I don’t know about where you live, gentle reader, but here in Brooklyn we are in the midst of a heatwave. It was 90° at midnight last night. Midnight! That’s some tropical shit right there. When it’s this hot, my mind turns to the ocean…and surfing. Well maybe not the latter part, but this week’s mix is vaguely surf inspired, partly due to seeing wonderful Seattle band La Luz last weekend. Their terrific track “Sure as Spring” is track #5 this week, but don’t skip ahead!

There’s also new music from Florida’s Jacuzzi Boys, The Resonars, Aussie band Dick Diver, great new UK band Hookworms and a “Mystery Track.” Plus Revillos’ “Rev Up” (which you may recognize from Sixteen Candles), The Tyde, and bonehead/offensive garage rock obscurity “Beaver Patrol” by Wylde Knights which was later covered by Pop Will Eat Itself. And lots more! Cover art this week is by veteran Summer Fridays contributor Kate Bryant whose new blog Lady Copywriter dissects the ad world in entertaining fashion. Check it out.

Also check out the mix, which you can grab right here:

Je parle un peu le français: Les vendredis d’été six trois!

Print

Happy Bastille Day! (Early.) While I have dabbled in Franco-leaning mixes, this is the first all-French one. I think it turned out pretty well, thanks in no small part to friend Heather, Toby, and Marlow. Also Erica Recto, who did this week’s none-more-français cover art. I especially like the baguettes (which at first I thought were jazz cigarettes).

I really am going to try and do liner notes for this one, as some of this stuff is pretty interesting. (For example, Oui Oui was Michel Gondry’s band in the early ’90s.) Until then….

summerfridays62

Is everyone having a lovely extended holiday weekend? I sure am. BBQs, watching fireworks on the roof, sleeping in…what’s not to love? And I finally got off my butt and — after an pre-summer, primer — we’re back with mixes in earnest for July and August at least.

This week’s is on the guitar pop tip, mostly flitting between the ’80s and now. Cover art is by me, but hopefully we’re going to have some outside design talent soon. Meanwhile, download and enjoy:

It’s not Summer or even Friday, but Summer Fridays are back

summerfridays6.1

And we’re back. I know it’s Sunday but I’ve always felt Summer Fridays were more a state of mind. Whether these will be every week or every other week is still TBD but I’m gonna try and keep these coming. This season’s first mix is pretty much full-on dance, though I think the Phoenix Foundation song would probably clear the dancefloor after Pulp’s storming “After You” (please make a new album) but I think it works here. (And it’s a good song!) The mix is bookended with songs using old-timey singing samples, so please enjoy that. I do put thought into these mixes, if not that much actual mixing ability.

Apart from Bent, which closes the mix, and Saint Etienne there’s not a lot of oldies on this one, but expect a nice decade distribution like usual in the weeks to come. There are also no songs on this mix with the words “sun,” “summer,” “beach,” “swim,” etc which might be a first. I digress. Anyway, please download and enjoy:
