So long, Summer Fridays 2013

This is the last Friday of Summer 2013 (fall starts on Sunday) and I’m wrapping things up with two mixes. The first is of the electronic variety with cover art by me. The second is a rocker, with cover art by our old pal and digital grafiti artist King of the Streets (KotS) who defaces an old picture of his dad, who used to be a “local model.” Quick, some new band, take that name. KotS also requested the aMiniature song you’ll hit about halfway through the mix.

I only managed to make 10 mixes this summer, the least I’ve ever done. I will aim to do better next summer. Until then…

Bye Bye 2012, here’s a bunch of mixes to download

Well it’s the last day of 2012 and, while I have got any of my lists up yet (just making sure My Bloody Valentine doesn’t decide to drop the new album as a NYE surprise or whatnot), here are my annual year-end mixes. Unlike previous years were I took stills from viral videos and other internet memes for the artwork, I turned over duty to actually talented people who had done covers for my annual Summer Fridays series.

I know I’ve forgotten bands/songs that should be on here, but as is you’re getting about 100 great ones that pretty much sum up my personal faves of 2012. I will have Best Albums, Singles, reissues, etc up later this week. Until then, enjoy the tunes and see you in 2013.

A note about the Sendspace downloads, you want to click the “Click here to start download from sendspace” text link. (The other “DOWNLOAD” links are ads, it’s what you put up with for free hosting.) Here’s a link to all five mixes, but individual download links are underneath cover art for individual mixes…

Cover art for Mix #1 is by Sable Yong who, when not singing for Year of the Tiger and Chalk and Numbers makes cool and impractical iPhone cases and other stuff you want at Rich and Damned. No, I do not know where that ramen is from (or maybe it’s udon?), but it looks very good! If only you could have animated GIF artwork work on iTunes…

Skate or Die: Summer Fridays 5.8

This week’s cover art was made by yearly Summer Fridays contributor and renegade digital street artist King of the Streets (KOTS) who, as you all know by now, values graffiti and property rights in equal measure. Hence, all his tagging is done via MS Paint. He also loves to shred and requested that this mix be something you can skate to. Well I did my best. There are some of the most aggressive songs ever committed to a Summer Fidays on this one (like GvsB) and maybe one of the most annoying (forgotten ’80s band The Sicilian Vespers, who I love). Plus, new tunes from METZ, The Soft Pack, Megaphonic Thrift, JEFF the Brotherhood and more. Rad?

16. The People’s Temple – Looter’s Game
17. The Fall – 2 X 4
18. The Intelligence – The Entertainer
19. Dinosaur Jr – Freak Scene
20. Gang of Four – I Found That Essence Rare

Information Please: Summer Fridays 4.11

How is it August already? (I think I ask this every year.) Anyway, we’re back with this week’s mix which is a little more hodgepodge than I’ve done this year. We’ve got dance, soul, ’70s obscurities, and the requisite whiteboy indie. But I think it works pretty well and there’s some great new music this week and hopefully some crate digging you’ll dig as well. Art this week by Ben Smith who is pals with famed tagger KOTS and I met at this year’s SXSW Festival where we talked music and neti pots. Yes, it’s a drawing of me. Ben, you’ve got a career on 42nd St. if you ever tire of the West Coast.

1. TV Girl – Benny and the Jetts
2. Pilot – January
3. Zoos of Berlin – Haven’t Eyes
4. The Supremes – It’s Time to Break Down
5. Hall & Oates – I Can’t Go for That
6. Röyksopp – Eple
7. The Drums – Money
8. The Raveonettes – Ignite
9. Widowspeak – Fir Coat
10. The Sneetches – From an Empty Sea
11. The Tyde – Henry VIII
12. Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks – Tigers
13. The Research – The Way You Used to Smile
14. Sly & the Family Stone – Runnin’ Away
15. The Experimental Pop Band – James Remains
16. Erika Spring – Six More Weeks
17. Casiokids – Det haster!
18. US 69 – Yesterday’s Folks
19. Scritti Politti – Cooking

You know the rules — no shuffling. Liner notes are below.

PS: about the download. Over at the Sendspace download page, after clicking the “Regular Download” button, it takes you to a new page. Scroll down and click the “Click here to start download from sendspace” link and not the big DOWNLOAD or PLAY thing at the top…that’s an ad.

Skate or Die…Summer Fridays 4.4

I was only ever truly good at one arcade game and that was Atari’s 720°. I could finish it on one quarter with mostly gold medals. Mostly. I thought of my past glory while looking at the current glory that is the cover art to this week’s mix, courtesy enigmatic street artist King of the Streets. As you may remember, he loves graffiti as much as he loves respecting people’s property…which is why he does all his tagging with MS Paint. The bmp file is a lost art that KOTS keeps alive and thank god for that.

I digress, this week’s mix has nothing to do with skateboarding. See for yourself (new link!):

1. Bananarama – Cruel Summer (+David Lindup intro)
2. The Cake – Baby That’s Me
3. Cults – Abducted
4. Cashier No. 9 – Goldstar
5. The Fresh & Onlys – Do You Believe in Destiny?
6. Blouse – Shadow
7. Odyssey – Our Lives Are Shaped by What We Love
8. The Style Council – The Lodgers
9. Hollie Cook – Used to Be
10. The Darling Buds – Let’s Go Round There
11. Sissy & the Blisters – We Are the Others
12. The Jesus & Mary Chain – Half Way to Crazy
13. Black Lips – Raw Meat
14. Pulsars – Lucky Day Pt. II
15. Brilliant Colors – Back to the Tricks
16. Christine Holmes – Here Comes My Baby
17. Art Museums – Dancing with a Hole in Your Heart
18. John Williams – Flowers in Your Hair
19. Sea Lions – Let’s Fall in Love
20. The Natural Yogurt Band – Pipe Dreams

BONUS MP3: KOTS’ requested the Cake song which kind of led the direction of this week’s mix, but when I saw KOTS’ cover art the first thing I thought of was this forgotten early ’90s gem/jam that may be familiar to those who watched Nickelodeon at the time…

MP3: Skatemaster Tate and the Concrete Crew – Justice

Oh I almost forgot to nag remind you that this mix is blended like a drink from Trader Vic’s so… no shuffling! Liner notes after the jump.

That Hard Shell Finish: Summer Fridays 3.4

We're still a few days from it actually being Summer but that is good, as we've got a whole season to look forward to: the oppressive heat and humidity, the crushing disappointment of everything Hollywood has to offer except for Inception, and gallons and gallons more oil into the Gulf. Good times!

On the plus side, this week's cover was done by famed street artist King of the Streets, who is probably the hottest name this side of Mr. Brainwash. As you may remember he's a staunch environmentalist (and suffers crippling agoraphobia), so all graffiti takes place via MS Paint. You can visit that turtle down at the South Street Seaport if you like. Musically, after a couple weeks of dancier fare, the guitars return for Summer Fridays 3.4. Please enjoy:

  1. The Jameses – Rat People
  2. Blur – Fool's Day
  3. Charlotte Gainsbourg – Trick Pony
  4. La De Das – How is the Air Up There?
  5. The Soft Pack – Pull Out
  6. The Megaphonic Thrift – Talks Like a Weed King
  7. Women – Narrow with the Hall
  8. Jacques Dutronc – Mini, Mini, Mini
  9. Eddy Current Suppression Ring – Gentleman
  10. The Turtles – You Showed Me
  11. Woods – Blood Dries Darker
  12. Love – A House is Not a Motel
  13. The Coral – Butterfly House
  14. The Morning Benders – All Day Daylight
  15. Film School – Waited
  16. Asteroid #4 – Let it Go
  17. Swervedriver – Birds
  18. Bear Quartet – His Spine

Disclaimer: all the songs are actually mixed together, despite being separate tracks so, say it with me, no shuffling! Liner notes after the jump.

Summer Fridays 2.7

Williamsburg licks
This week's mix is a little schizo: some goth shoegaze, some new 7" finds, and a lot of '90s indie rock nuggets. And then there's the '80s rockin' "Free Energy" which is total top down convertible fodder dumb fun. The Archers of Loaf track was chosen by this week's cover art contributor KOTS. That's his tag name. KOTS loves grafitti, but he also hates defacing other people's property so he does his work completely in MS Paint. If you'd like to do a cover, do get in touch. Have a swell weekend, folks. And no shuffling!

Here's the tracklist. I'll try and get liner notes up over the weekend.

1.  The Horrors – Scarlet Fields
2.  Archers of Loaf – Wrong
3.  Free Energy – Free Energy
4.  Zaza – Sooner or Later
5.  Engineers – Sometimes I Realize
6.  Number One Cup – Waiting for the Lions
7.  Flaming Lips – Silver Trembling Hands
8.  Uninhabitable Mansions – Do You Have a Strategy?
9.  Fergus & Geronimo – Harder Than It's Ever Been
10. Jale – Not Happy
11. Pavement – Gold Soundz
12. Echo & the Bunnymen – Rescue
13. Blow Up – Good to Me
14. Sex Clark Five – Detention Girls
15. Nodzz – True to Life
16. Let's Active – In Little Ways
