Two Minute Warning: Summer Fridays, ADD Edition

29 Jul

I’ve gone high concept this week, and that is not a reference to this week’s cover art which is by my friend Davie Kaufmann. No, I mean there’s a gimmick: all the songs on Summer Fridays 4.10 are less than two minutes long. All 33 of them (maybe even 34). With this kind of criteria, we don’t really have much in the way of new music (two songs by my count) but quality remains high of course. I’ve tried to vary it up as much as possible because the bulk of the two-minutes-or-less songs in my collection are of the young, loud and snotty variety. If you don’t like a song, just think it’ll be over soon.

Shuffling this mix could cause seizures or blindness: don’t do it! Liner notes, which are all Twitter-length in keeping with the theme, are after the jump.

1. R.E.M. – White Tornado
Watch out, it’s a white tornado!

2. Lilys – Any Place I’ve Lived
From their Dino Jr./MBV period which I like best.

3. The Byrds – The Girl with No Name
I hadn’t seen Davie’s cover art when I decided I wanted this song on the mix, I swear.

4. The Yummy Fur – Policeman
Oh policeman, I’d love to spend an evening snorting cocaine of the stomach of your girlfriend. Then maybe later we can listen to The Residents

5. The Magnetic Fields – Washington, D.C.
T-O-N, baby! DC!

6. Saturday Looks Good to Me – Underwater Heartbeat
Seriously, Cults basically ripped SLGTM off hook, line and reverb.

7. The Bees – End of the Street
Hello Bees? Spike Jones is on the phone and needs his sound effects back.

8. Sergio Mendes & Brazil ’66 – Bim-Bom
If the words seem slightly wrong, that’s the way they wrote this song.

 9. The Undertones – She’s a Run Around
What a total disaster.

10. Wax Museums – Mosquito Enormo
This is one of the new songs on the mix though it sounds like it’s from 1983, this one’s super snotty.

11. Pavement – Debris Slide
Eyes in the socket, so I’m gonna sock it!

12. Lee “Scratch” Perry – Gumma
This song is about oral hygiene I think which is something Lee Perry probably coulda used more of.

13. Carol King – Crying in the Rain
Pre-Tapestry CK when she was writing girl group songs, a real charmer.

14. Felt – Ferdinand Magellan
Please relax to this instrumental, which was the B-side to “Ballad of the Band,” written by keyboardist Martin Duffy.

15. Grovesnor – Lickstick
It’s glitchy, but Grovesnor’s love of ’70s soft rock is still there.

16. Minutemen – Maybe Partying Will Help
There HAD to be a Minutemen song on here.

17. Wire – Champs
A full two years before the Buzzcocks’ “Harmony in My Head” if you were wondering. Really shoulda put a Buzzcocks song on here now that I mention it.

18. Young Fresh Fellows – How Much About Last Night Do You Remmeber?
One of America’s finest bands of the last 30 years but you probably knew that already.

19. Ruts – Out of Order
Helping fill that young loud and snotty quotient on this week’s mix. This is especially snotty.

20. Camper Van Beethoven – Wasted
A cover that bests the original? With improved lyrics — “I was so gnarly and I drove my dad’s car.”

21. Boyracer – Airport Song
A lot to choose from by Boyracer who have like a zillion songs, most of which are under two minutes.

22. Royal Bangs – Loosely Truthing
The other new one this week, from Nashville. My friend Mike is their biggest fan.

23. Thrush Hermit – Every Morning I Reread The Postcards
From the days when Halifax, NS was the next Seattle.

24. Jay Reatard – You’re Gonna Lose
We miss ya, Jay.

25. The Vaselines – Dum-Dum
I love the way Eugene yells “Dum Dum!” in this one.

26. The Strawberry Alarm Clock – Birds in My Tree
Why can’t everybody just mellow out and get along and just like love each other?

27. Adventures in Stereo – The Attic Walk
Constructed entirely from samples of their own making.

28. Fleetwood Mac – That’s Enough for Me
Tusk is a really weird album.

29. The Fall – Terry Waite Sez
Terry Waite was Archbishop of Canterbury Robert Runcie’s Assistant for Anglican Communion Affairs in the 1980s.

30. Shop Assistants – Nature Lover
One of the quintessential ’80s indiepop bands, man this still sounds great today.

31. Dead Milkmen – Filet of Sole
Big Lizard in My Backyard was one of the first “punk rock” albums I ever heard and I LOVED it in high school.

32. So Cow – Halcyon Days
What the hell is a “Stundard?”

33. Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci – The Barafundle Bumbler
And this whirlwind mix ends on a placid note with a weird, lovely song from Gorky’s. Yes this is 2:10 but it just might be there’s another song contained herein.
