Spent the morning in a virtual waiting room getting shut out of Arcade Fire tickets? Take the sting away by picking up a couple for fellow Montrealians Malajube who will play Mercury Lounge on February 18 as part of a fairly extensive below-the-border tour.
The band were one of the big hits of this past year’s CMJ Festival, blowing away most who saw them — despite (or maybe because) singing exclusively in French. Poppy, the rocked too, and tight as merde. I caught them at the Fader storefront, and even with the short set and stark white setting, I was duly impressed. Their album, Trompe l’oeil, didn’t make my Top 20 of 2006, but it was close.
For most of the US dates, they are playing with another buzz band, Snowden, making it one not to miss. (I can’t really comment on Snowden, as I’ve avoided them for some reason. I guess I should check them out.) And Malajube should enjoy it too, if for no other other reason than our Al-Gore weather. Even if it does decide to start acting like February, anywhere else in the US is likely to be warmer than Montreal.
